The planning, programming and management instruments for a park have a vital function in the policy of protection and conservation of the natural habitat and of biological diversities in a protected area and in the policy of improvement and permanent development.
The Pollino National Park is situated in the Pollino and
Orsomarso areas of the Calabro-Lucano Appennine mountain chain, between two regions, Basilicata and Calabria, and lies between two seas, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian.
The surface area of approximately 196,000 hectares hosts a population of about 170,000 developed in two regions, three provinces, 9 Mountain Communities and 56 municipalities. It is of great naturalistic and environmental, as well as historical and cultural value, with important scientific points of reference, but at the same time it pours into a social and economic problematic situation.
The Park Plan is marked by its interdisciplinary planning character. The integrated planning combines the conservation of the environment in relation to the anthropic development while defines and enhances the contents of physical, naturalistic, landscape, environmental, economic, social, anthropological, historical and cultural interest.
